Guidelines on Writing News Posts

May 26, 2012

This is a style guide for updating the new PSHS Main Campus website (http://mc.pshs.edu.ph)

Writing the Title

  • Be as concise and informative as possible.
  • Use either Filipino or English. As much as possible, avoid code-switching.
  • Use words that are less than 12 letters (using more than 12 or more letters can look ugly in the homepage slideshow)
  • Capitalize all nouns, pronouns and verbs, and all other words of four or more letters.
  • Capitalize an article–the, a, an–or words of fewer than four letters if it is the first or last word in a title.
  • For Job Postings, use the vacant positions as the titles, instead of using “for immediate hiring” or “vacant positions available”

Permalinks
Use descriptive permalinks. Multiple words are okay. Remember, these are permanent, so include years (2012-math-intersection) or sequence numbers (seventh-science-fair, first-sportsfest-winners) if dealing with news events which may happen again in the future.

Body Article

  • Use the screen just like a normal blog writer. If you don’t know how to write HTML, use the “Visual” editor instead.
  • Subtitles should have a “heading 3” style format, or should be enclosed in <h3></h3> tags.
  • Smaller subtitles should have a “heading 5” style format, or should be enclosed in <h5></h5> tags.
  • Do not align anything at the center, except for small photos and their corresponding captions.
  • Feel free to use bold, italic, lists, tables, blockquotes, strikethroughs, underlines, and hyperlinks.
  • If the article is long, use the “Insert More Tag” button in the Visual Editor to add a page break.

Feature in Content Slider
Check this box if the news item is important and it needs to be featured in the homepage slideshow. If it will be featured, you need to write a one-sentence excerpt about the article. (Check the “Excerpt” box in the “Screen Options” dropdown menu at the top of the page.)

Featured Image
The featured image is required for all articles to be published on the homepage. It should be aesthetically pleasing and descriptive to the article itself. Do not use photos which are owned by other people or companies or websites, unless you have permission to do so. The featured image should be at least 900x700px.

Format
Always use the “Standard” format.

Categories
The website has five prescribed categories for all news articles. Using multiple categories are ok.

Tags
The website did not include tags in the navigation system of news articles, but it’s okay to use them, they just wouldn’t appear anywhere in the site.

Embedding Media (Photos/Videos)
The usable width of all content pages is constant at 560 pixels. When uploading and inserting a photo, it’s okay to upload a file larger than 560 pixels, as long as you specify in the “Add Media” dialog box that the size of the photo/graphic is large (560px wide). For videos, since our webspace is limited, it’s more advisable to upload it in either YouTube or Vimeo and then embed it (customize the size of the video to 560px) in your page/article.
